Southeastern Fight League’s
Hooters Friday Night Fights

Occasionally I get asked- “so who is fighting this Friday night? I really don’t know, fighters are determined by who shows up at weigh-ins at 6:00 PM the night of the fights. I’m not being cocky when I say- “show up and find out!” I’m there but no one is there to see me…

Every week I see fighters enter the octagon for the first time and I see something in the way that they fight that makes me look for them again on the fight card. Sometimes when I interview them, I ask what fighting style or fighting strengths fans should look for as they fight. Some fighters say, I am good at stand up, I throw a powerful punch, and comments of the like. Watching the fights each week, I make my own notes about strengths I see in a fighter.

I like glancing at the fight card and seeing guys returning for another fight, there is something about seeing a fighter advance in his abilities as a fighter and the level of fight that they have in them. Every fighter is unique. As a fighter trains more and more, their skills become more evident.

This past Friday night when I read the fight card – I had to read it twice- Jake Baxley was on the fight card! Jake Baxley, Steve Baxley’s son. Jake as a fighter isn’t how a lot of people see Jake. Jake is a guy in a band, he’s a guy that works the sound at the fight center, he’s a high school student, and he’s a nice guy. But, Jake is also a guy that is always at the dojo, he’s always training; he’s his father’s shadow, eventually Jake let it be known he had some fight in him that wanted to come out. So, what was Steve to do? Put him on the fight card, what else?

Jake Baxley vs. Daniel Swope in the octagon was something to see! It was the only fight of the night that went three rounds. All through the fight the crowd was on the edge of their seats. All eyes were on Jake and Daniel. Daniel trains with Jake, but in the octagon, Jake unleashed the fighter he had inside and all I could say about that fight was, “DANG, that was a fight!!” Steve Baxley was Jake’s corner man, but inside the octagon, it was all Jake. Now we can all know him as, Jake Baxley, MMA fighter. Way to go, Jake!

Southeastern Fight League NEWS

I just viewed Sensei Steve Baxley, Coach Johnny Trawick, Ty Harris, and Ronnie “The Hat” Robinson on Media Trax Studios T.V. show. This was aired and taped 3-13-2010. Watch it here.

Favorite quote from the interview-
Moving from Boxing to MMA is like going from “Checkers to Chess!” - Johnny Trawick

I am a spectator, but I fully agree with Coach Trawick. When I interview MMA athletes, they often tell me, to be able to win in MMA, you have to be smart enough to get out of any situation that your opponent can put you in. Otherwise, you are left confused and thinking over and over again of what you might have done differently. Week after week I watch guys fight their first fight, loose, train, and come back the next week, loose again, train harder, weigh- in again in a few weeks - and then, WIN. One win doesn't make them stop training, it makes them train harder.  These fighters are ones that have a dedication and love for MMA and want to improve their fighting skills.  The Southeastern Fight League has new fighters weigh-in every week and after a fight, they can create a buzz and makes the fans come back week after week to support them.

I met Andy Wade about eight months ago and he is in training for his second professional fight.  He's a much stronger fighter than he was when we met.  He's been working on his techniques and I can't wait to see him fight again! GO PRO. FIGHTER - ANDY WADE !!!
Dray Burch, Shawn Carthon, & Andy Wade
Wolfpack MMA Professional Fighters

Training is key to being successful. I’m looking forward to the next professional MMA fight in Talahasssee, FL – Ubersmash III  at the Moon April 24th, 2010. As you may remember, Andy Wade, Shawn Carthon, Zach Lassetter and Dray Burch stepped out of the octagon defeated at Ubersmash II.  I’ve been to the Wolfpack MMA Dojo and I’ve seen these guys in serious training. I’m a fan and if you can, make plans to come to Ubersmash III to support these local pro. MMA fighters.

DANIEL HENLEY

Daniel Henley
GECF Welterweight Champion

Daniel Henley, the current Gladiator Elite Cage Fighting Welterweight (156-170) Champion was in the crowd at the Hooters Friday Night Fights at the Southeastern Fight Center. He won the title last year fighting Michael Berry. He won by KO 0:48 in the first round. Daniel is currently training for his next fight coming up  May 2010.

When we talked he told me about the grueling training that he endures getting ready for a fight, which includes day long endurance, starting out with a 10 mile run with a 25 lb. vest, tractor tire tossing, lifting car axels and moving them a certain distance and several other obstacles that he had to accomplish within a certain time frame, or he would have to do it all over again… and this is just what he had to go through before he got into the gym for that day’s workout! I saw the pictures from his training. I was impressed. To be a champion, that’s the type of training and dedication it takes; hours of nothing but training from before daylight until long after the sun goes down. Along with the strict dieting and dropping weight; it’s all part of what an ambitious MMA athlete endures.  From what I saw from his training pictures, Daniel is a true Gladiator, just like his title states just from his MMA training endurance alone!

Henley has been fighting MMA for five years.
His record is 8-2 height 5’9” 37 yrs. old

Q: You won your title in Warsaw Indiana, where are you from ?
Henley: I’m a local from the Dothan area.

Q: Describe your first octagon fight and did you win?
Henley: My first amateur fight was against a guy named Chubbs, I won. I choked him out 1:30 in the first round.

Q: Do you have a nickname or a fight name?
Henley: Hurricane

Q: Do you have a hidden talent?
Henley: Not really, I’ve played a lot of sports and excelled at all of them, so I’m multi-sports talented. I like to win.

Q: Is there a fighter you see as a mentor or that you like?
Henley: Urijah Faber WEC “The California Kid”

Q: What area of your fighting do you feel like you have improved the most since your last fight?
Henley: Muay Thai training. My stand-up has improved and I really like throwing kicks and breaking ribs.

Q: Are you superstitious or have a routine that you do before a fight?
Henley: I only have my hands wrapped by certain people.

Q: Are you spontaneous or a planner?
Henley: Spontaneous

Q: What would you be doing if you were not MMA fighting?
Henley: My day job is in heating and cooling, but my dream job would be a Pro. Bass fisherman. I really like to fish.

Q: You’ve traveled all over the U.S. is there any place you want to travel in the future?
Henley: I’d like to travel to London. They have MMA there.

It was great to meet Daniel “Hurricane” Henley. Fans will be watching for his next Gladiator Elite Cage Fighting (GECF) Match coming up in May in Indiana.

Daniel, best wishes for success and holding on to the GECF Welterweight championship title!

SOUTHEASTERN FIGHT LEAGUE’S
HOOTERS FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

Feb. 26, 2010

The Hottest ticket to have in Dothan on a Friday Night is one to The Southeastern Fight League’s Hooters Friday Night Fights. There is great live local music and this past Friday night, Patrick with “The Brightside Suicides” provided pre-fight music. Check out their music, it's great!

Patrick

Don’t miss this coming Friday night! You never know which fighters you might see in or around the octagon!

This week we saw the boys from Georgia return – you may remember I spoke with them a few weeks ago about the importance of a good name- they previously called themselves the “Down South Georgia Boys”- well they revised that and are now called the “Bainbridge Brawlers”. Bainbridge Brawlers had four fights on the fight card- and every one a winner.

Bainbridge Brawlers
Anderson, Wallace, Williams, Smart

Every Friday night is different and fans can never predict the outcome of any fight. Friday night was full of only one round fights. If you missed Friday night, you missed some really good fighters. These guys delivered, even just shy of the three minutes by three seconds! All of the fighters got into the octagon and put forth tremendous effort even for the short time in the cage. It was the first night the SFL had two sets of brothers listed on the fightcard.

The fightcard is getting better and better with new athletes every week. Hope to see you there next week!

Danny Ruiz Capitao Jiu-Jitsu & MMA

DANNY RUIZ

DANNY RUIZ & KELLY WILLIAMS

Saturday Feb. 20th Wolfpack MMA hosted a free training seminar with MMA Professional fighter, Danny Ruiz.  Ruiz is one of the top welterwieghts in the state of Florida. Ruiz owns Capitao Jui-Jitsu & MMA in Ft. Walton, FL- "The only real MMA gym on the Emerald Coast."

Steve Baxley is running the only real MMA gym in the southeast and he is dedicated to offering the best training for his students.

Ruiz is an excellent teacher.  Ruiz was professional and made the three hours fun but still a grueling workout as they practiced techniques.  Ruiz and his fellow instructor, Kelly Williams made sure the crowd of  approximately thirty people recieved individual attention to make sure they understood and could perform what he was teaching. Everyone benefitted from his instrucion.  I even learned a thing or two and I was just a spectator!

Being an MMA athlete requires training and dedication.
"Rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming but on our own readiness to recieve him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable." - Sum Tzu

Training makes a big difference when MMA athletes step into the octagon, the level of training is determined when they hear their name announced, "winner! "  Keep training!

Thank You to Danny Ruiz and Kelly Williams for a great training session!

Wolfpack MMA will offer more of these training sessions in the future.  They are not to be missed if you are an MMA athlete.

SOUTHEASTERN FIGHT LEAGUE’S
HOOTERS FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

A few weeks ago I met Kevin Christopher owner of the Thomasville Combat Academy.  He and a few of his students came to see the fights.  He said he was bringing his guys to fight in the SFL octagon and friday night was the night.

Christopher put his guys through a strict training regime to prepare for the fights.  His guys proved that training pays off. Christopher has been training his guys for less than a year and one fighter, Ezra Griffin had been in training for about 6 months. Griffin didn't win his match, but his skills were evident in his fighting ablility.

Each week the fighters that step into the octagon are diverse and vary in ability and skills. I can say that each Friday night is not lacking in a surprise or two.  Friday night the first fight was fast and nasty.  The two were the biggest guys on the fight card; Alexander 233 lbs. Vs.Brenton 237 lbs. Brenton landed a brutal strike 26 seconds in the first round and the KO looked like a giant falling face down to the mat.  Blood pooled underneath his face from the meeeting of fist to face.  It happened so fast, that it was hard to believe that it just happened, from a spectator's view.

That was not the only surprise of the evening - the Salsbury vs. Harrison fight went three rounds and electrified the crowd. Every time a fight goes three rounds fans know they have just seen a battle.

Don't miss next Friday night!

Miguel Mello

Miguel Mello

One of my favorite amateur fighters is Miguel Mello. He has stepped into the Southeastern Fight Center's octagon with more experienced fighters, and goes three rounds if the other guy lasts that long. He is very impressive in the octagon with his fighting technique and determination to win. He is one fighter that doesn't look like much of a threat when you see him but he proves he's worthy to wear the gloves every time he steps into the octagon.  I’ve been trying to catch up with Miguel after his last few fights, and he is always on the go. Lady luck shined on me last Saturday night and Miguel answered my ten questions. I’m looking forward to watching his next fight.

Miguel Mello MMA

1. Where are you from?
Mello: Colorado Springs, Colorado. I’ve lived here three years.

2. How old are you?
Mello: 22 yrs. old

3. Do you have a nickname or a fight name?
Mello: Mr. Magoo

4. What do you like/ hate about MMA?
Mello: MMA is a test of strength and brains. I don’t hate anything about it.

5. Are you spontaneous or a planer?
Mello: I’m a planner.

6. Are you superstitious or have something you do before each fight?
Mello: I pray.

7. What is something that you like now that you used to not like?
Mello: Fighting. I used to watch UFC on television and became interested. I just began training Nov. 2009

8. What is your favorite music?
Mello: Rock

9. Who is your favorite MMA athlete?
Mello: Machida & BJ Penn

10. What is the last promise you made your mother?
Mello: That I would stay out of trouble with the law.

Kevin Christopher

Kevin Christopher

Kevin Christopher & Me

What happens when a champion steps into the Southeastern Fight Center? Well, he gets interviewed of course. I met Kevin Christopher, a professional fighter who has bragging rights for the MMA titles he has won over the years, including being the only American to win the title of Brazil’s MMA “KING OF THE JUNGLE.”

Christopher said, “I was once a Lion's Den member under Ken Shamrock in Chula Vista, California.I later moved to Brazil and trained under the late Carlton Gracie Sr. and earned my purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu..I won the Middleweight title at King of the Jungle 2 in Manaus, Brazil in 2004. I am retired from the military and now living in Thomasville,GA. My profesional record in MMA is 5-2-0 with 5 KO's. 2001 to 2003 formed Team Bad Boy USA (Mixed Martial Arts Team)”

Christopher is teaching at his MMA Combat Academy in Thomasville, GA. He met Steve Baxley at Ubersmash II and has been looking for a venue for his team to compete.

Here are two of his fighters that we will see enter the Southeastern Fight Center's octagon in the future.
Jake "Wolf" Williams & Ezra Griffin

Fight Card January 29, 2010
Southeastern Fight League’s
Hooters Friday Night Fights

Non-stop rain, thunder and lightning did not stop the fans from traveling from out of state to completely pack the Southeastern Fight Center on the last Friday of January. There were a handful of new fighters that entered the octagon from Bainbridge, GA. Fans were not disappointed that they braved the weather because it was a fantastic night of fights.

Fight #1 Delegal vs. Yeatman was won after 38 seconds in the first round.

Fight #2 Rich vs. Anderson was won in the second round.

Fight #3 Reese vs. Hardin was won after 2:22 in the first round.

Fight #4 Gordon vs. Williams went the full three rounds and was one of the best middle weight fights that have ever been held in the SFL octagon.

Fight #5 Seig vs. Lowman went into 48 seconds into the third round and Lowman surprised everyone when he won by a rear naked choke after the first grueling two rounds.

For the added fight, no one could guess who was stepping into the octagon (as if the fights could not get any better) The excitement was built with the announcer repeating the 8-0 stats of one of the fighters. The big surprise was when the announcer said this “Crouch 8-0 vs. Watkins 11-0”
(you may have noticed Watkins is the referee every other fight night) Neither of them could think of both of them leaving the octagon without a loss on record, there would be a loser. Watkins won after 1:18 in the second round.

Fight #6 Canty vs. Mizell was a rematch from their last meeting in the octagon was announced as a draw.

These fights are full of the unexpected. It doesn't matter if the fight goes for a few seconds or for the full three rounds- it is worth being a spectator in the crowd. New fighters step into the octagon every fight night. I also met some fighters from Thomasville, GA that will be in the Southeastern Fight Center’s octagon in the coming weeks. (see my following post)

UBERSMASH II

UBERSMASH II

Ok. So you missed UBERSMASH II? Guess who didn’t??
I didn’t miss UBERSMASH II!! Along with local fighters, Shawn Carthon, Andy Wade, Zach Lassetter and Dray Burch. I wasn’t in the octagon like the fighters, but I did have the opportunity to have a backstage pass to the anticipation, nerves and adrenalin before the fights.

Preparation for the fights is a knot of emotions for the MMA fighters. Mental attitude is 90 % of the fight. It’s the feelings – the rush, the panic and the anxiety – of walking to the Octagon in a MMA professional debut and staring right down the barrel at an opponent with a desire to ground-and-pound your face to mush. Despite that initial fear they entered the octagon, the Wolfpack fighters wanted to make a good first impression and show the world what they can do. I’m sure their opponents went through all the same anxieties. Backstage the fighters have pep talks with their coaches, they get their knuckles wrapped, gloves in place and then they get in the right frame of mind for entering the octagon. I watched the fighters bounce around, throw punches and get pumped with their ipods and mostly chill to go inside their own heads before the fights.

I eased some of the tension distracted fighters before the fight by doing a few video interviews. I interviewed Jeremy Smith, Shane Weinischke, Josh Hancock, Chris Cope, Shawn Carthon, Zack Odom, and Zach Lassetter. I got to ask about ten questions and each fighter spoke of sportsmanship and love for MMA. Video of the fights along with my interviews (technical difficulties happened and the interviews were lost, sorry, I really hated that because the fighters were good sports to participate)can be purchased from
Area 51 Computers, 3123 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36303.
Ph: (334) 794-2732.

Ubersmash II was held at The Moon, Talahassee, FL There was a huge crowd. There was not an empty seat in the whole place. I had a great view and saw a few Dothan locals there who also came to support the Wolfpack team. The fighters appreciated local fan's support. It was plain to see by the cheering of the crowd that our guys were the underdogs. I screamed my single voice out for Shawn, Andy, Zach and Dray surrounded by a mob of locals vocalizing their mad love support for local fighters. I have a loud voice and being a single loudmouth cheering for the opposing team in a fight pumped crowd was similar to the feeling of being an alien in a new world. I felt the same anticipation as any fan when their favorite fighter is in the octagon, I screamed, I yelled their names, and I made suggestions of what to do in the octagon. (uh, like I know what a ‘triangle’ is and how to get out of one????)  I know the fighters heard my coaching all the way from my place on the stairs just below the third tier of raging fans. I was in the moment and felt my voice could make the difference, like yelling at the TV during a sporting event, but the difference was I was there live; the Wolfpack was fighting right in front of me. My voice could be heard. To my dismay, I might have well had been across the world, because my words had no impact.

I saw Shawn Carthon loose to a guillotine choke, Andy Wade had to tapout, Zach Lassetter almost made it to round 2 with a little blood loss, and Dray Burch, came to impress at his second time in the professional octagon. When the Wolfpack entered the octagon, I had a sense of pride from watching them locally and then seeing them in the larger arena. That pride continued even with the losses. I am a fan. I feel like they are back at the beginning of their game. They have just begun. They will take a few losses, but it won’t be long before it is a Wolfpack arm that is raised after the match and any or all of the Wolfpack team will be announced as a winner after the professional fight. I hope to be there when it happens. I hope you will be there also to share in the victory. You can also follow along with their careers and stats by looking up their names in the official MMA record finder here on the right.

Shawn, Andy, Zach and Dray-
“the pain of difficulty is nothing like the pain of regret.” - unknown. You all have nothing to regret. Wolfpack fighters entered the octagon at the Moon and did all they could do. For some, they had never been in a professional fight before, it was a scary place. Once you’ve been there, you know that you’ve got to keep pushing and you can change things. You keep going until they break you or knock you out. A fighter can’t train for that; they’ve had to have been through it before. Experience is a great lesson.

During the night other fighters had a much tougher night than the Wolfpack. Other fighters really took a beat down. The fourth fight of the night went three rounds and was an approx. three point win. One other fighter lost by a serious KO. Get a copy of the DVD from Area 51 Computers, 3123 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36303.
Ph: (334) 794-2732 and watch it for yourself!

There was excitement each time a pair of fighters stepped into the octagon.
Here is the fightcard for Ubersmash II:

1. Shawn Carthon vs. Lionel Skinner
Winner: Lionel Skinner  by Submission 0:48 in the first round
2. Andy Wade vs.   Mitchell Chamale
Winner: Mitchell Chamale by submission (by rear naked choke) 1:58 in the second round
3. Zach Lassetter vs. Matt Munzey
Winner: Matt Munzey by TKO / RSC at the end of round one
4. Shane Weinsichke vs. Dan Funes
Winner: Dan Funes by Unanimous decision at the end of the third round
5. Ramon Keizman vs. Zack Odom
Winner: Ramon Keizman by submission 0:42 in the first round
6. Josh Hancock vs. Jeremy Smith
Winner: Jeremy Smith by TKO/ RSC 1:11 in the first round
7. Dray Burch vs. Tristian Payne
Winner: Tristian Payne by TKO/ RSC 3:15 in the first round
8. Chris Cope vs. Josh Samman
Winner Josh Samman by KO in the first round.

Losing Ubersmash II was very unfortunate for the Wolfpack and that’s just the way it goes sometimes. The Wolfpack will just move on from it. I know they got straight back into training, working hard and looking forward to another opportunity, to be announced “Winner!”

Teams

I realized I have been interviewing a whole lot of Wolfpack team members. There are other local MMA teams that fight at the Southeastern Fight League. Fighters like French – Who started with Team Tallahasse MMA, Peterson- Team Underdog, Reed- Team Konflict, Curtis- Team Revolution and Terry – Team Supreme. {These are just a few I have watched- I know there are more local MMA teams} Each week there are new fighters that want to weigh in and come into the octagon for a match. Teams happen almost overnight or over a plate of hot wings and a beer at Hooters.

Team DSGB (Down South Georgia Boys)
Clarence Smart, Pedro Williams, Josh Serrano

Such a team is DSGB (Down South Georgia Boys)
Clarence Smart fought against Canty Jan. 15th for his first time in the octagon. I thought I would get to know the new fighter a little so I asked him if he fought with a team and he said, “I fight with these guys; they are my team,” as he pointed at the guys sitting at the table with him . (Josh Serrano and Pedro Williams) They did not have a team name, and I stressed that a good team name is important. They questioned a few names and I told them to think it over and let me know by the end of the night.

How did Smart get into this fight? Smart attends Bainbridge College and one of his classmates, Josh Serrano was showing some MMA moves in the gym one day and Smart became interested. He has no MMA training but wanted to learn. Josh Serrano fights MMA and taught him some moves. And not long after he was at a weigh in and fought his first SFL fight.

Clarance Smart

I stopped to talk to Smart before I went home and asked again what team name they came up with and the three of them agreed on DSGB (Down South Georgia Boys). PedroWilliams has a DSGB tattoo on his forearm. So the name was fitting.

The Southeastern Fight League will see more of Team DSGB in the future.
